do not believe all that you here, even if it comes out of guy harvey’s mouth. there is not a red snapper shortage in n.w. florida especially! we are constantly battling the state and feds on this subject. this is just another ploy to support their agenda to suppress recreational fisherman. guy is a victim of the system as well, because they are steadily feeding him the incorrect numbers they have tried to make us believe.
I know there has been a lot of questions regarding the blog Guy Harvey Makes a Difference.
Prior to Guy publishing information such as “Makes a Difference” he consults with many organizations and researchers of the industry . One of these organizations is NOAA. When you find the time go to NOAA’s website at their Fish Watch (NOAA.org). I will save you the time and copy you on the information NOAA.org writes…
The Gulf red snapper population is currently at a very low level (overfished). Managers do not currently have enough data to determine the population size of South Atlantic red snapper.
Both red snapper populations are being harvested at too high a rate (overfishing).
In addition to overharvest and discards of red snapper in the directed fishery, bycatch (unintended and unused harvest) of juvenile red snapper by the Gulf shrimp fisheries has contributed to the depletion of Gulf red snapper. Managers are working to reduce the bycatch of red snapper in shrimp fisheries.
Snapper is low in saturated fat and sodium and is a very good source of protein. For more information, see Nutrition Facts. (USDA)
Over 4.5 million pounds of red snapper, valued at over $13 million, were caught commercially in 2006
