Parrot Heads are returning to Key West, October 30th – November 2nd for the 17th Annual Meeting of the Minds…and we can’t wait! For approximately the last 7 years, Key West has welcomed the Parrot Heads from all over the world. There are over 200 clubs around the U.S., Canada, Europe and Austrailia. In other words, that brings A LOT of Jimmy Buffett fans on a 2 by 4 mile Island for four days! They come together to promote fellowship (definition: partying it up in style), volunteer service and raise money for many charities.

Guy Harvey’s Island Grill in Key West has a special place in our hearts for the Parrot Heads and is a one of the places the Southernmost Parrot Head Club conduct their meetings. The Grill recently donated a Land Shark Surf Board to the local Key West chapter for the “Welcome to the Island” party. The surf board will be one of many items in a silent auction to raise money for local charities.

Join Guy Harvey’s Island Grill & Shop in Key West for the 36th annual Poker-Run, September 18th – 20th. Guy Harvey’s Island Grill & Shop are joining the Official Peterson Family for the Main Event! We will present the Texas Hold Em’ Grand Finale at 11:00pm. Join those holding the ten best poker hands as they all participate in one round of Texas Hold Em. The one with the best hand wins a brand new Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 Custom. The idea of the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation came from art collectors, fishers, sportspeople, and conservationists who share Guy Harvey’s love of the ocean and vision to help it thrive for the benefit of future generations.

Our next generation is counting on us to make sure that the ocean is there for them. Whether training future scientists or advocates for the oceans, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation will fund education programs to prepare our children to understand their role in saving our oceans.

Guy Harvey’s inspirational artwork and television programs will expand to new media, used by our next generation, with lessons of commonsense conservation and responsible activity on the water and at home. The Guy Harvey Ocean Laboratory will come alive in classrooms and community centers across the world to motivate aspiring scientists and stewards of our oceans.

The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation is working with educators, scientists, and multi-media specialists to design innovative education programs for schools, community groups, and learners at home of all ages. The messages and lessons will be so personal that each of us will understand our individual roles in conserving our oceans.

The Scientific Advisory Board will craft grant criteria and carefully evaluate applications to ensure that each philanthropic dollar is invested in worthwhile, practical solutions to our oceans’ greatest challenges, and Guy Harvey will personally oversee and participate in the research’s field work.
Donors may designate their gifts to scientific research, the development of education programs for future scientists, or in the area of most critical need. The Guide is based on the research Guy does that leads to finding commonsense solutions to reversing overfishing, pollution, and other threats to the marine habitat.
Since 1999, Guy Harvey has funded research that has led to a broad understanding of the genetics of fish populations, which helps law enforcement officials curtail illegal trafficking of endangered species. Other work has discovered new species in new habitats and clues for better fisheries management.

Double the Fun

Wyland has invited Guy Harvey to paint with him a 1000-foot mural on the new Wyland Walk, located at 7399 West McNabb Road (just east of Rock Island Road) in North Ft. Lauderdale. The mural is an official International Year of the Reef event. Wyland began painting on Friday, June 6th and will continue to paint each day through Friday, June 13th. On Saturday, June 14th at 12 noon, there will be an official dedication ceremony at the wall site.

For Guy Harvey fans…Guy will be painting Thursday, June 12th in the morning through the afternoon and Friday, June 13th all day. If you have a chance to watch Guy and Wyland in action, I personally recommend attending the event. I have had 3 different opportunities to watch the two artists paint walls together – Key West, Florida – Marathon, Florida and Key Largo, Florida and it is an amazing site to see.

Not Your Ordinary Vacation

When a vacation comes to mind, most of us think about a warm place on the beach or by a gorgeous pool, soaking up the rays while someone brings you a cocktail with carribbean music in the background. Well what if I said…let’s go vacationing on a private boat, do some diving with several (3 or more!) tiger or lemon sharks? Yes, I said diving with many sharks. The private boat sounded good, even the diving – but with sharks – most people would say – I’ll pass!

But we all know, Guy Harvey just does not fall into the “most people” category. We live through Guy’s tenacity and fearless drive to know the marine life. Recently Guy took a trip, and I had the honor of hearing the stories first hand. I also was shown several AWESOME photos that were taken by Neil Hammerschlag. So, I could not wait to share them with Guy Harvey fans, shark fans, etc.

Words cannot describe the feeling you get when you view these pictures away. The purpose of the trip was to try and find if the sharks are still alive, dive with them, and to record enough footage for use in a
made-for-TV show and as a source of inspiration for Guy to come home and paint them in their natural environment. Guy accomplished all this and more. In fact Guy would like to go back with other marine biologists to record the number of sharks and possibly place tags in the sharks to record their movements.

The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation funds inspired scientific research and innovative educational programs to encourage conservation and best management practices for sustainable marine environments. Through the support of the Foundation’s visionary friends, leading scientists will develop new strategies for sensible fisheries management, encouraging the cooperation of commerical and recreational fishers. Our goal is to put the word out about the Ocean Foundation that was recently founded in January. The organization was developed to broaden Guy’s research on a broader scale.

Guy Harvey Teams Up with the World Sailfish Championship

Guy will be in Key West, FL for the 5th annual World Sailfish Championship to donate an original work-of art to be auctioned off for charity. The proceeds from the Tournament will be divided between the Don Shula Cancer Foundation, Camp Boggy Creek, the Rotary Club of Key West, American Red Cross, Bahama Village Music Program, MARC and Guy Harvey Research Institute at NSU. The Tournament runs from April 15th through April 19th.
